People
Who they are
The San Martín Quechua, also known as the Lamas Quechua, live on the slopes and in the valleys of the Amazon region in northern Peru. Unlike other Quechua groups in the Andean highlands, they developed their identity fully immersed in the tropical rainforest. They steadfastly preserve their native language variety, communal work, and rich farming and craft traditions.
