The Sedang are an indigenous ethnic group living in the forests and mountains of Vietnam’s Central Highlands. Their language belongs to the Mon-Khmer family, and they have a strong cultural identity preserved over centuries through communal life in isolated hillside villages. Their history is marked by resilience and a deep attachment to the land of their ancestors.
Their mother tongue is the primary means through which they pass down songs, oral narratives, and ancestral traditions, keeping alive the memories and wisdom that guide family life.

Life in Sedang villages revolves around subsistence farming, based on growing rice, corn, and cassava on mountainous terrain, as well as raising livestock. The village is organized around the communal house, a traditional building with a high roof where men gather to make collective decisions, celebrate agricultural festivals, and welcome visitors. Solidarity among neighbors and communal work are essential values in daily life.
Most Sedang practice their people’s traditional religion, which is deeply connected to animism and reverence for the spirits of nature and their ancestors. Ceremonies and offerings are frequently held to appease these forces and seek protection for crops and family health. Although a significant portion of the population has embraced the Christian faith in recent decades, community pressure to maintain ancient rites remains constant.

Sedang communities face challenges related to geographical isolation, with limited access to medical services and schools in hard-to-reach areas. Spiritually, local Christians need mentoring, Christian literature in their language, and biblical maturity to guide their families with steadfastness and hope.
