People
The Semandang are an Indigenous people who live in the forests and river basins of inland West Kalimantan, on the island of Borneo in Indonesia. Part of the wider Dayak cultural group, they maintain a deep connection to their ancestral land and preserve their own language, which underpins their community identity. Their traditional villages are situated along rivers, waterways that have shaped travel and trade for many generations.

Daily life among the Semandang revolves around subsistence farming, especially rice cultivation, supplemented by rubber tapping and river fishing. Families value community cooperation during planting and harvest seasons. Although modern life brings new challenges to the interior of Borneo, family ties and village life remain the foundation of survival and social honor.
Historically, the Semandang worldview has been shaped by traditional Dayak religion, in which nature spirits, omens, and ancestral souls call for constant rituals of appeasement. Although significant portions of the population have embraced Christianity, ancient animist practices still influence daily life in many villages, creating an environment where spiritual fears remain very much alive.

Semandang communities face geographic isolation, with limited access to basic medical services and quality schools deep in the forest. Spiritually, the local church needs biblically trained leaders and resources in the heart language so that Christian faith can go beyond formal rituals and bring true transformation to families.
