People
The Sempan live along the coast of Mimika in Central Papua, Indonesia. Although they are often grouped with the Kamoro, they identify as a distinct people with their own language and history. Harvesting sago, a food extracted from a palm tree, and fishing are part of their livelihood. Catholicism reached the community in the 1950s. In the 1990s, residents of Omawita and Fanamo reported changes in the color and taste of shellfish and feared the effects of mining waste.
