The Senufo Niangolo belong to the wider Senufo ethnic family and live in West Africa, with a significant presence in southwestern Burkina Faso and areas along the border with Ivory Coast. Known for their deep appreciation of the land and community life, they preserve the Senara language at the heart of their cultural identity. They keep alive artistic traditions and ancestral rituals that guide the transition from childhood to adulthood, remaining closely connected to their villages and the customs inherited from their ancestors.

How they live
Daily life revolves around subsistence farming, growing corn, sorghum, yams and cotton. Work in the fields is communal and strengthens ties between neighbors and relatives. Social life is guided by councils of elders and traditional initiation societies, where young people learn values of respect, solidarity and civic duty through proverbs and manual work.

Most practice the traditional Senufo religion, centered on the supreme creator and mediated by nature spirits and ancestors. Respect for sacred trees and family altars is essential to maintaining spiritual balance and warding off misfortune. Pressure to participate in community ceremonies is intense, as faith is intertwined with collective survival.
