Who they are

The Sha live in ten villages in Sha district, in the Bokkos local government area of Plateau State, Nigeria. They say they came from different places and spoke different languages, then united under the name Sya, which means “unity.” Their language, Sya, belongs to the Ron group of Chadic languages. They are mainly farmers, growing fonio (a small grain), sweet potatoes, sesame and beans. Most follow traditional religions; Christians are a minority, and there are also Muslim families.
