Who they are

The Shenzhou live in Guizhou Province, in southwestern China, and have a unique historical background. Descendants of Chinese soldiers sent to the region several centuries ago who intermarried with neighboring peoples, they preserved the Mandarin language while adopting customs and dress from local minorities. Although the government classifies them as part of the Han majority, the community values its distinct identity and maintains respect for ancestors in the daily life of their rural villages.
