The origin of the Sonars is tied to the development of artisan castes within traditional Hindu society, when work with precious metals became established as the hereditary occupation of a specific group. Over time, the people split into numerous territorial subgroups and received different names depending on the region: Soni in Gujarat and Rajasthan, Swarnkar in Haryana, Sonaro in Sindh.

This geographic spread led the Sonars to settle outside India as well, following trade routes and migrations to Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. In each of these places, the group kept goldwork as a mark of identity, even while adopting the language and some customs of the surrounding populations.

Work with gold and silver remains at the center of Sonar economic life, whether in small neighborhood workshops or jewelry stores in the cities. With greater access to education, many families today also pursue other professions, but the goldsmith’s craft remains the caste’s point of reference and a source of pride.

Sonar workshops make the gold pieces used on major family occasions, especially weddings, when demand for jewelry rises among Hindus, Nepalis and Sri Lankans. This role gives the group a prominent place at one of the most important moments of local social life, and reinforces the link between the caste’s name and the metal it works.

The Sonars are Hindu, and their faith is interwoven with the caste’s own social position within the varna system. Household rituals and festivals of the Hindu calendar follow the same calendar and customs as other Vaishya families in the region where they live, with goldwork recognized as part of the social standing inherited by the caste.

Religious belonging also organizes community life: marriages, alliances and family reputation largely follow the norms of caste and the Hinduism practiced locally. Changing faith, in this context, means breaking with a network of belonging built up over generations.

In the main languages spoken by the Sonars, the Bible already exists in full: this is the case for Hindi, Bengali, Sindhi and Tamil, while in Maithili, spoken by part of the group in Nepal, the New Testament has been translated. The Hindi text also has audio recordings, which extends its reach among those less accustomed to reading. Despite this availability, the Sonar community’s actual access to Scripture depends on direct contact with Christians, rare today within the caste’s social network.

Among the Sonars, Hindu faith is bound together with caste identity and the goldwork trade itself, which carries religious meanings tied to prosperity and fortune. Leaving Hinduism can be understood as abandoning not only the family’s religion but the social standing and network of relationships built around the inherited profession. The absence of churches or believers from within the caste itself makes first contact with the gospel rare, and pressure to maintain wedding customs and household rituals reinforces the distance from any change of faith.

As with other artisan castes, many Sonar families face pressure to maintain a traditional trade amid competition from industrial jewelry and swings in the price of gold, which strains household budgets even in families with a long tradition in the trade. At the same time, greater access to education has been widening work choices for the newer generations.

In the spiritual realm, the greatest need is presence: there are almost no Christians of Sonar background, nor faith communities that engage with the caste’s culture and language. Discipleship, genuine friendship and Scripture within reach of everyday life remain open needs.
