Sonar muçulmano

The Sonar tradition traces back to Hindu mythology, which attributes the caste's origin to a divine craftsman created by the god Vishnu to serve as goldsmith to the gods. This founding myth explains why working with gold and silver became, over the centuries, more than a craft: a mark of identity passed from father to son within the caste system of the Indian subcontinent.

Over time, a small number of Sonar families converted to Islam, forming the Muslim branch of the group, today concentrated mainly in Punjab province, Pakistan, with pockets also in northern India, where they kept the ancestral craft even after the change of faith.

The goldsmith’s craft remains at the center of Sonar identity: generations of artisans have learned to work gold and silver, shaping jewelry that features in weddings and festivals as a sign of status and family heritage. Alongside the traditional craft, many today work as merchants, traders, landowners, or lend money to other families in the region.

The nuclear family is the most common model, and marriages happen almost always within the community itself, with no practice of child marriage. Access to higher education has grown in recent generations, opening the way to new professions without breaking the caste and kinship ties that sustain Sonar identity.

The Muslim Sonar follow Sunni Islam, the largest branch of the Islamic tradition, lived out within a caste community that is mostly Hindu, Sikh, and Jain. This coexistence produces a dual identity: they belong to the Islamic religious tradition, but also carry the customs, origin myths, and social practices inherited from the Hindu caste they descend from, without most families seeing this as a contradiction.

The Islamic faith is expressed above all in the belief that salvation depends on submission to the will of Allah and faithful fulfillment of his commandments, a path of merit and obedience that guides the moral and religious life of every Sonar family.

In Pakistan, where most Muslim Sonar live, the group’s predominant language is Saraiki, spoken in the Punjab region. In India, Urdu is the most common language among them. In both countries, social and religious life revolves around mosques and the local Islamic tradition, not Christian communities, and direct access to the Scriptures remains rare within the group.

To be Sonar is, for most, to be Hindu, Sikh, or Jain: caste identity is historically tied to these traditions, and the small Muslim group lives as a minority within a minority. The belief that salvation depends on the will of Allah and on good deeds leaves little room for the idea of grace. Being generally a middle class or prosperous community, many Muslim Sonar feel self sufficient and see little need to seek another faith.

As a middle class or prosperous group, the Muslim Sonar face no obvious material hardship, but almost completely lack Christian witness within their own community. The prosperity and self sufficiency that mark the group make a genuine encounter with the gospel even more necessary, something rare in a social network closed around caste, the goldsmith’s craft, and the mosque, where few bridges exist today for Christian witness. They also lack true friendships with Christians that could open space for conversations about faith.
