People
The South Giziga inhabit the plains and rocky foothills of Cameroon’s Far North, belonging to the broader family of Chadic-speaking peoples. Historically connected to the land and the rhythms of the Sudanian savanna, they preserve a strong community identity expressed through music, seasonal celebrations, and attachment to their mother tongue. Their villages, organized around kinship ties and ancestral lineages, reflect a history of resilience and cultural adaptation amid social changes in northern Cameroon.

Daily life among the South Giziga revolves around subsistence farming, particularly millet, sorghum, and peanuts, supplemented by raising goats and poultry. Families live in enclosed compounds of mud huts with thatched roofs, where daily work is shared among household members. Pottery making and traditional weaving remain part of life, and local markets serve as vital places for trade and social interaction.
Traditional spirituality profoundly shapes this people’s worldview. They revere ancestral spirits, whom they consider protectors of the family and guardians of crop fertility. Rituals and offerings are performed to maintain cosmic harmony and seek healing during illness. Although they have contact with other religions in the region, animist beliefs remain the community’s main source of identity and moral guidance.

Families face challenges related to seasonal shortages of safe drinking water and irregular rainfall, which affects food security. Access to basic health services and quality education in rural villages remains limited. Spiritually, their central need is to engage with the Scriptures already available in their mother tongue, alongside strengthening local leaders who can disciple the community in culturally appropriate ways.
