People
Who they are
The Southern Teke, also known as Kukuya, live in Lékana District, in the Plateaux Department of the Republic of the Congo. Their language, Teke-Kukuya, is still used in daily life and in conversations among community members in Lékana, but according to a 2024 thesis, younger people are losing knowledge of its vocabulary and grammar. The vast majority identify as Christians, while a small proportion follow traditional religions.
