People
The Thadou live in the hills of Manipur in northeastern India, near Imphal. The vast majority identify as Christians. Their identity is rooted in the Thadou language, their clans, and village life. They preserve the memory of the war against British rule from 1917 to 1919. Women weave items such as the Saipikhup, a cloth that symbolizes Thadou identity and dignity. Since May 2023, conflicts between communities in Manipur have affected the lives of many families.

Rice is the staple food and main crop. Traditionally, the Thadou practice shifting cultivation, clearing and burning the forest. Their villages are usually on hilltops, with houses built of wood, bamboo, and thatch. The role of chief passes from father to eldest son, and the chief oversees law, justice, and customs. Women continue to weave, passing their knowledge of the loom from generation to generation.
Most Thadou identify as Christians, but many are Christians more in name than in practice, and beliefs from their former religion still have a strong influence. Before Christianity, they believed in Pathen, the creator, and in spirits that lived in forests, houses, waters, and along paths. Priests made offerings to ward off misfortune. Bible teaching and the training of pastors therefore remain necessary.

The Thadou need peace in Manipur. After the conflict began in 2023, the state radio’s Thadou language team left Imphal, and live programming in their language stopped. Families need safety and a livelihood. Churches need well-trained pastors and Bible teachers to explain the Scriptures and support the community.
