Who they are
The Tombulu are one of the main subgroups of the Minahasa people, located on the northern peninsula of Sulawesi, Indonesia. Their villages and urban centers are concentrated mainly on the fertile slopes around the city of Tomohon and near the regional capital, Manado.
They have a distinctive cultural identity characterized by the Tombulu language and a strong sense of community. Over the generations, they have preserved traditional musical expressions, harvest festivals, and a distinctive cuisine, adapting their ancestral roots to the challenges of contemporary urban life.

How they live
Many Tombulu families make their living by farming rich volcanic soils, growing cloves, vegetables, coffee, and ornamental flowers, as well as through trade in urban centers. Community life is governed by a traditional system of mutual assistance, in which neighbors join together for agricultural tasks and communal construction projects.
Harvest festivals and family gatherings feature community feasts and music played on stringed or percussion instruments. Hospitality is a central value in everyday relationships.
What they believe
Christianity is the professed faith of the vast majority of the population, the result of a long history that has shaped public institutions and the community calendar. The church plays a central role in social identity and civic ceremonies.
However, ancestral traditions and reverence for spirits of the land still persist subtly in some rural practices. The central spiritual challenge is to deepen personal commitment to Christ, moving beyond merely formal religious observance inherited as part of the culture.
