Who they are

The Azerbaijani Turks form the largest ethnic minority group in Iran, concentrated mainly in the north and center of the country, around cities such as Tabriz. They speak a language of the Turkic family, close to the Turkish spoken in Turkey, but live day to day alongside Persian, the official language of the country where they live. That linguistic and cultural duality shapes a distinct identity: fully Iranian and, at the same time, marked by Turkic roots different from the Persian majority.

Despite historical tensions between Azerbaijanis and Persians, today Azerbaijanis hold positions at every level of Iranian life, in politics, in the armed forces and in the religious hierarchy. The way of life of Azerbaijani families in Iran closely resembles that of the Persian families around them, although the language and certain customs keep alive a Turkic heritage that passes down through generations.

History and origin

The Azerbaijani people descend from Turkic groups that migrated from Central Asia toward the Caucasus and the Iranian plateau over the centuries, mixing with local populations and adopting Shia Islam, which would become the religious mark of the region. Over time, this Turkic presence became established in the area known today as Iranian Azerbaijan, in the north and northwest of the country.

Modern political borders split the Azerbaijani people between Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan, but the branch that remained on Iranian soil followed a historical path intertwined with that of Persia, deeply absorbing Persian culture, religion and institutions without completely losing its language of origin.

How they live

Cities such as Tabriz, one of Iran’s major urban centers, concentrate much of Azerbaijani life: its historic bazaar, one of the largest covered markets in the world, still drives trade, craftsmanship and social life today. Carpet weaving is a prominent traditional craft in the region, known for the quality of its materials and the richness of designs passed down from generation to generation.

Bilingualism marks daily life: Azerbaijani is the language of the home, of poetry and of clan and family identity, while Persian dominates public life, business and formal education. This coexistence between two languages and two cultural heritages is a natural part of growing up Azerbaijani in Iran.

What they believe

The Azerbaijani Turks of Iran are mostly Shia Muslims, like the majority of the Iranian population, and this faith is imposed and upheld by the state. Everyday religious practice, however, tends to be less strict than the devotion officially required, since many live Islam as a cultural and national heritage more than as an intense personal conviction.

Being Azerbaijani and being a Shia Muslim are deeply intertwined in how this people understands itself within Iran. This fusion between faith and national belonging also makes religious identity a matter of loyalty to the community and to the history shared with other Iranians.

Language and the Bible

Azerbaijani belongs to the Turkic language family, and the variety spoken in Iran, South Azerbaijani, is considered by most linguists a distinct language from the one spoken in the Republic of Azerbaijan, written there in the Cyrillic alphabet and, in Iran, in Perso-Arabic script. Versions of the New Testament and portions of Scripture are already available in this southern variety, including a complete Bible translation aimed specifically at Iranian speakers. Even so, access by ordinary Azerbaijani families to these translations remains limited by the circumstances of the country where they live.

Barriers to the gospel

In Iran, Azerbaijani identity is deeply tied to Shia Islam and to loyalty to the Iranian state, which makes any change of faith seen as an act of betrayal against family, people and nation. Those who leave Islam for Christ face a real risk of social rejection, surveillance and persecution, since conversions are treated by the authorities as a political threat, not merely a religious one. Churches that use Persian are not allowed to evangelize Muslims, and gatherings of converted Christians are often monitored and, when discovered, harshly suppressed.

Needs

As part of Iranian society, Azerbaijani families face the same economic pressures and political restrictions that affect the country as a whole, creating a need for stability, for freedom to live out their faith safely, and for spaces where spiritual questions can be asked without fear. Few Azerbaijanis today have contact with a Christian or with a visible, welcoming Christian community of faith nearby.

The few who already believe in Jesus among the Azerbaijanis need protection, discipleship and brothers and sisters who can sustain them in an environment where the Christian faith is still viewed with suspicion and risk.

What to pray for
Intercede for this people
For the few Azerbaijani families who already believe in Jesus in Iran, that they may have courage and be fruitful in sharing the gospel.
For a movement of faith in Christ that reaches whole Azerbaijani families and communities.
For protection for those who decide to follow Jesus and face rejection from their own family and community.
For greater access to the Scriptures in the Azerbaijani language among ordinary people, not only among specialists.
For the emergence of stable and safe faith communities among the Azerbaijanis of Iran.
For workers who learn the Azerbaijani language and culture and can walk alongside this people.
That Azerbaijanis may be increasingly drawn to Jesus and to the Word of God, even amid the restrictions they live under.
