Most families engage in agriculture on the mountain slopes, cultivating corn, beans, and squash for subsistence. Textile crafts, especially weaving heavy sheep’s wool tunics, play a central role in daily routines and household economy. Public life is governed by the traditional system of civic and ceremonial offices, in which members take on rotating duties to preserve the village’s harmony.
The spirituality of the Chamula merges elements of historic Catholicism with ancestral Mayan rites. Their most significant ceremonies take place in temples illuminated by hundreds of candles set on pine needles on the floor, where traditional healers perform petitions and healing rituals. Participation in these customs is seen as essential to the ethnic identity and cosmic order of the entire community.
