People
Who they are
The Umpila live in the Lockhart River region on the east coast of Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, Australia. Six traditional peoples live there, each with its own language. Umpila and Kuuku Ya’u are closely related varieties, and speakers of one can understand the other. No one has used the language daily for decades, and only a few elderly speakers remain. Speakers and researchers have created an app to teach these languages. There are Christians among the Umpila.
