People
Who they are
The Uvbie, also called Uvwie, live in the Ethiope area of Delta State, southern Nigeria. They have cultural ties with the Urhobo, who form 24 kingdoms, but Uvwie is spoken in only two of them. The Uvbie consider their language distinct from Urhobo and use Urhobo, English or Nigerian Pidgin, a contact language, when communicating with other Urhobo clans. Most identify as Christians; some follow traditional religions and others say they have no religion.
