Who they are

The Vezo are known as the people of the sea in southwestern Madagascar. For them, identity is defined by more than birth; it also rests on an intimate relationship with the water: to be Vezo is to live from the sea, paddle canoes, and navigate the coastal coral reefs.

Living in coastal villages and on isolated islets, they preserve a distinctive maritime culture within the Malagasy family, navigating the tides in traditional outrigger canoes and maintaining a strong sense of community cooperation along the Mozambique Channel.

How they live

Daily life revolves around small-scale fishing, gathering octopuses and shellfish, and trading dried fish. Families build dugout canoes equipped with colorful sails and wooden outriggers. Men and women work together in handling the catch. Their routine follows the rhythm of the tides and seasonal winds, while community members support one another in daily tasks and in decisions made by the elders.

What they believe

Traditional beliefs deeply shape the Vezo worldview. Ancestor worship and strict observance of ritual prohibitions, known as sacred taboos, guide daily routines and fishing activities. Although Christian influences are present in some coastal villages, many still fear displeasing the spirits of the sea and their ancestors, seeking protection through regular traditional ceremonies, offerings, and rites.

Needs

Geographic isolation makes it difficult to access health clinics, clean drinking water, and quality schools along the coast. The depletion of marine resources and the force of cyclones threaten families’ daily livelihoods. Spiritually, there is a need for local Christian leaders equipped to share the Scriptures in ways that speak to their rich coastal culture.
