Who they are

The Wagga, also known as the Waja, live in northeastern Nigeria, mainly in the Balanga area of Gombe State, and also in Adamawa State. Their communities occupy hills and plains near the Gongola River basin. There are hill Waja and plains Waja, depending on where they settled. Most make their living from farming. They have long-standing ties with the Lunguda, including marriages between the two peoples. They speak the Waja language.

How they live

Waja family farms produce peanuts, cotton, sorghum, pearl millet and cassava, among other crops. Some families also raise cattle, goats and sheep. There are artisans who weave and dye cotton cloth. Alongside farming and craftwork, limestone extraction led to the establishment of a nearby cement factory, providing another source of income for the Waja.

What they believe

Traditional beliefs have many followers among the Waja, alongside Islam and Christianity. When the Jesus film was shown in Waja, many were surprised to hear their own language coming from the screen. Waja Christians use the Gospel of Luke and other portions of the Bible in their language to share the message with their people, and they want more of God’s Word in Waja.

Needs

Peace between the Waja and Lunguda deserves attention. In May 2021, officials and representatives of the two peoples met following episodes of violence and the displacement of local residents. Safety when returning to their fields and the resolution of land disputes were among the concerns. A commitment to reconciliation from religious leaders and young people was one of the requests made at that meeting.
