Waimiri-Atroari
UnreachedThe Waimiri-Atroari are an indigenous people living in a region of dense forest between the states of Amazonas and Roraima in northern Brazil, along rivers and streams of the Amazon basin. The name brings together groups that speak variants of a single language, belonging to the Carib language family, and that over time have come to recognize themselves as one people. They call themselves Kinja, a word that can be understood as “true people” or “real people.”
The recent history of the Waimiri-Atroari was marked by intense contact and conflict, especially during the construction of roads and large projects that cut through their territory in past decades. That period brought enormous population loss and deep wounds for the people. Today they live on a demarcated indigenous land and have sought to reorganize, rebuild their population, and preserve their language and customs.
Their mother tongue remains alive and is spoken daily in the communities, being central to the group’s identity. Many hold a strong attachment to their traditions, even as contact with the surrounding society brings new challenges. The Waimiri-Atroari remain a people with little known Christian presence, with almost the entire population linked to their traditional ethnic religions.

The Waimiri-Atroari live in villages spread across their territory, organizing life around kinship relationships and decisions made together by the community. Their livelihood comes mainly from subsistence farming, growing cassava and other foods, along with hunting, fishing, and gathering fruit from the forest, activities that require deep knowledge of the environment they inhabit.
Material culture and traditional knowledge, such as house construction, food preparation, crafting of objects, and songs and rituals, are passed down between generations. Among their current challenges are protecting their territory from outside pressures, health care, access to services, and balancing the preservation of their own way of life with the growing presence of the surrounding society.
The great majority of the Waimiri-Atroari follow their traditional ethnic religions, a worldview in which the visible world and the world of spirits are deeply intertwined. The forest, rivers, animals, and ancestors hold a central place in this view, and spiritual life is expressed in songs, rituals, and practices led by those recognized as keepers of mysteries and healing.
Christian presence among them is minimal, and the gospel is still little understood within their own language and culture. For this people, coming to know the message of Jesus Christ in a faithful and respectful way, in their mother tongue, remains a distant reality yet to happen.
The Waimiri-Atroari carry deep wounds from a past of loss and suffering, and need healing, hope, and reconciliation. On the spiritual level, there is a need for them to know the love of God revealed in Jesus Christ in a way that respects their identity and language. On the practical level, needs remain for protection of their territory, health care, strengthening of the community, and preservation of their own culture, so that they can live with dignity and security on their land.
