People
The Western Subanon Kalibugan are an Indigenous people who inhabit the mountainous and coastal areas of the Zamboanga Peninsula on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. The term subanon means “river people,” reflecting their ancestral connection to the region’s river valleys. Over the centuries, Kalibugan identity developed through interactions with neighboring peoples and adaptation to profound social and cultural changes in their traditional territory.

Subsistence farming is the mainstay of community life, with upland rice, corn, tubers, and fruit grown on the hillsides. Some residents living closer to the coast supplement their income through small-scale fishing. Social life is organized around family ties and villages led by respected elders, who preserve customs and mediate local matters in a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect.
Christianity is widely professed within the community, the fruit of decades of Christian witness on the peninsula. Even so, ancient beliefs in nature spirits and rituals for protecting families remain part of popular belief, calling for biblical discipleship that strengthens authentic faith and helps believers understand the Scriptures in everyday life.
