People
The Yambasa of this group, also known as Gunu, live in the Centre Region of Cameroon, in the Mbam-et-Inoubou Department, in the areas of Ombessa and Bokito. The Gunu are one of the communities grouped under the broader name Yambassa. Their language is Nugunu. Gunu communities are divided between the cantons of North Gunu and South Gunu, spread across these two administrative areas. In written Nugunu, the acute accent indicates high tone, while low tone is left unmarked.

Many Gunu families make their living from farming. Cassava and its leaves, taro and cassava couscous are among their everyday foods. A drink called nnumpe, tapped from palm trees, accompanies these foods. The region is difficult to reach, especially during the rainy season, making it harder for families to transport and sell their harvests.
Catholic priests brought the gospel to the Nugunu-speaking area in 1927. Today, many Gunu attend Catholic churches, and there are also Presbyterians and members of other Protestant churches. Most of the people identify with Christianity, while part of the population follows traditional religions.
A people only truly understands the gospel when they hear it in the language of their heart. See how far the translation has come.

Access to safe drinking water, health care and school costs are practical challenges for Gunu families. Some residents walk up to two miles to fetch water, and school expenses make it difficult for students to continue their education. Biblical training in Catholic and Protestant churches also needs attention, with materials in Nugunu for family reading and for those who prefer to listen.
