Who they are

The Yansi live in the southwest of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in Kwilu Province, including the territories of Bagata, Bulungu and Idiofa. They speak Iyansi, also called Kiyansi, and many use Kituba as a trade language. Family ties are traced through the mother’s line: children belong to their mother’s family group.

Marriage involves both families, with meetings and commitments before the union. These ties are part of Yansi identity. Growing cassava and fishing are very important to the people’s livelihood.

How they live

Cassava holds a central place in Yansi farming, alongside fishing as a means of making a living. They also grow mantete squash, mainly for its edible seeds. In their family structure, a child belongs to the mother’s clan, that is, the group of relatives connected to her. Marriage preparations involve relatives and include a formal visit by the groom’s family.

What they believe

Almost all Yansi describe themselves as Christian, with a strong Catholic presence, but traditional practices continue. They acknowledge a distant creator God, called Nkier a Mpung, and believe in protective spirits that guard their homes. Twins are venerated and called amwol. In the Iyansi Bible, the translators chose the word “Mwol” for “Lord”, rather than “Mfumu”, which is used in Kituba.

Needs

Poor roads and bridges make it difficult to transport Yansi produce to markets. There is little work outside farming, and electricity in the region is available only through privately owned diesel generators or solar panels, which hampers communication. The churches also need unity: many have split repeatedly, almost never over matters of doctrine. The people need leaders who teach the Bible faithfully and care for others.
