People
The Yucatan Maya inhabit the Yucatan Peninsula in southeastern Mexico, with communities also found in parts of Belize and Guatemala. Descendants of one of Mesoamerica’s most significant civilizations, they keep their language alive and maintain strong community ties.
Their identity balances their ancestral heritage with the changes of modern life. Despite urban growth and tourism in the region, many villages preserve oral traditions, agricultural knowledge and a deep connection to their homeland.

Milpa agriculture, a traditional system of growing corn, beans and squash, still supports many rural families. Others work in handicrafts, commerce or the service sector in tourist areas. Social life centers on the extended family, and traditional cuisine, including dishes prepared in earth ovens, brings neighbors together for community celebrations.
The Christian faith is widespread in everyday Maya life, with a strong presence of evangelical and Catholic congregations. In certain villages, ancestral customs and requests for blessings on the harvest are still interwoven with popular religious practices, although commitment to the Bible continues to grow and transform community life.

Many rural communities struggle with inadequate healthcare services and a lack of jobs for young people, encouraging migration. Spiritually, there is a need for accessible theological training for local Christian workers and discipleship materials that strengthen biblical faith in everyday life.
