People
The Zafisoro are an indigenous people who inhabit the southeastern coast of Madagascar, mainly in the area near Farafangana. They share linguistic and cultural roots with the wider Malagasy family, maintaining strong ties to the local forest and rivers. Their identity is marked by deep respect for traditions inherited from their ancestors, community cohesion, and attachment to the land where earlier generations are buried. Although they live near other regional groups, they maintain their own lineages and distinct customs.

Their livelihoods depend mainly on growing rice in floodplains, cultivating cassava, and fishing in freshwater streams and rivers. Small coffee and fruit crops help supplement family income. Villages are organized around the authority of elders, who guide collective decisions and mediate conflicts. Community life is active, with cooperative work during harvests and festivities centered on honoring the cycles of life and the land.
Traditional faith guides daily life through the worship of ancestors, known as razana. The Zafisoro believe that their ancestors directly influence harvests, health, and the destiny of the family. Life is governed by a system of ritual prohibitions, called fady, and breaking them brings fear of spiritual punishment. Funeral rituals and offerings remain central to maintaining harmony.

Communities face geographic isolation and limited access to health clinics and quality schools. The region experiences floods and tropical storms that damage crops. Spiritually, there is a lack of trained local leaders and materials that would enable families to understand the grace of God without the burden of spiritual fear.
