What it is

The Horn of Africa comprises 4 countries at the continent’s eastern tip, shaped like a horn projecting toward the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea: Djibouti, Eritrea, Somalia and Ethiopia. It is one of the world’s most strategic regions, carrying a significant share of international maritime trade, and also one of those most affected by drought, political instability and forced displacement in recent decades.

Ethiopia preserves one of the planet’s oldest Christian traditions, but Somalia and Djibouti are among the world’s most predominantly Islamic nations, with very little visible Christian presence. Eritrea, in turn, severely restricts religious freedom, making life especially difficult for the local church.

Of the Horn of Africa’s 147 ethnic groups, 60 are still considered unreached. The regional average proportion of evangelicals is 15.2%, driven mainly by Ethiopia, and 89 of its 130 local languages still have no Bible translation.

Pray for this strategic, suffering region, that peace may reach its peoples and the gospel may come to those who have not yet heard it.
