What it is

The Greater Antilles are the Caribbean’s largest and most populous islands: Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. Together they account for most of the Caribbean population and carry remarkable histories, from the Cuban revolution to the independence of Haiti, the first free nation formed by formerly enslaved people in the Americas.

The region has 16.2% evangelicals, alongside the predominant Catholicism of Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, and Afro-Caribbean practices still strong in Haiti. Cuba also experienced decades of religious restrictions under the communist regime, shaping church life on the island in a distinctive way.

Of the Greater Antilles’ 27 people groups, 6 are still considered unreached. Of the 31 languages spoken in the region, 10 still have no part of the Bible translated, a figure including Creoles spoken by specific communities, especially in Haiti.

Pray for these four islands with such eventful histories, where the church endured decades of restrictions in Cuba and extreme poverty in Haiti, that it may remain steadfast and reach the peoples still waiting for Scripture in their own language.
