Forest of Ephraim

Meaning
The name forest of Ephraim may recall, according to ancient commentators, the slaughter of Ephraimites that took place there in the days of the judge Jephthah, though the exact origin of the name is uncertain and the woods lay on the opposite side of the Jordan, in Gilead, outside the territory of the tribe itself. It was the battlefield where Absalom's army was defeated and where Absalom himself died caught by his hair in an oak tree.
About the place

The forest of Ephraim was the setting of the decisive battle in the civil war between King David and his son Absalom, who had rebelled against his father and tried to seize the throne of Israel.

Despite the name, the woods lay east of the Jordan River, in the rugged region of Gilead, near Mahanaim, where David had taken refuge. According to ancient commentators, it may have received this name in memory of the slaughter of Ephraimites that took place there in the days of the judge Jephthah, though the exact origin of the name is uncertain, and not because it belonged to the territory of the tribe of Ephraim.

On the day of the battle, the difficult terrain, full of ravines and dense brush, killed more soldiers than the sword did. Absalom’s army was defeated, and twenty thousand men died.

It was there that Absalom, fleeing on a mule, got caught by his hair in the branches of an oak tree and was killed by Joab, David’s general, against the king’s express order that he be treated gently.

The forest of Ephraim reminds us that rebellion against authority established by God carries a heavy price, and that God’s justice and mercy walk together even in the most painful moments of a family’s history.

The place today
The place today
