Mount Nebo lies in the Abarim range, east of the Jordan River and the Dead Sea, in the region the Bible calls Moab.
It was to its summit, on Mount Pisgah, that Moses climbed at the Lord’s command, at the end of forty years leading Israel through the wilderness.
There God showed Moses the whole promised land, from Gilead to Dan and as far as the western sea, the land that would be given to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Moses saw the land, but could not enter it, because of his disobedience at Meribah. It was there, on Mount Nebo, that he died at a hundred and twenty years old and was buried in a valley whose location no one has ever known.
Mount Nebo thus marks the end of the earthly journey of the greatest leader of the Old Testament, and the passing of Israel to the generation that would finally cross the Jordan under Joshua.
