Mount Sinai

Meaning
Mount Sinai, also called Horeb in several biblical texts, was the place where God revealed himself to Moses in the burning bush and later gave the Law to Israel. The exact origin of the name is uncertain, but the mountain was marked in Scripture as the setting of the most direct encounter between God and the people of Israel in the Old Testament.
About the place

Mount Sinai lies in a desert region that the Israelites crossed after leaving Egypt. It was there, even before the exodus, that Moses saw the bush that burned without being consumed and heard God introduce himself as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Three months after leaving Egypt, the whole people camped in front of that same mountain. Amid cloud, fire and smoke, God came down on Sinai and gave Moses the Ten Commandments and the rest of the laws of the covenant.

While Moses was still on the mountain, the people lost patience and asked Aaron for an idol, the golden calf. The scene exposes the contrast between the holiness revealed there and how easily the human heart turns away from God.

Even so, God renewed the covenant and gave Moses new tablets of stone. Centuries later, the prophet Elijah fled to that same mountain, weary and afraid, and there God did not speak in the wind, the earthquake or the fire, but in a gentle whisper.

In the New Testament, Paul uses Sinai as a figure of the old covenant of the Law, in contrast with the freedom of grace in Christ. The mountain thus marks both the weight of the Law and God’s patience with his people.

The place today
The place today

The site traditionally identified with Mount Sinai lies on the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt, in an arid mountainous region near the border with Israel. Since the fourth century, the peak called Jebel Musa, the mountain of Moses, has been revered in Christian tradition as biblical Sinai. At its foot stands Saint Catherine's Monastery, one of the world's oldest inhabited monasteries.

The exact identification is traditional, supported by ancient Christian devotion but not confirmed by archaeological finds. Some scholars propose other locations, including in Saudi Arabia, with no agreement on which is the correct mountain.

Today Egypt is a predominantly Muslim country with a Coptic Christian minority that has endured for centuries. Pray that the Egyptian people may know the God who revealed himself on this mountain not only in fire and thunder, but also, as to Elijah, in a gentle whisper of grace.
