Philadelphia

Meaning
The name Philadelphia means brotherly love. The city was founded in the 2nd century BC by Attalus II, king of Pergamum, who was given the nickname Philadelphos for his loyalty to his older brother and predecessor on the throne, Eumenes II. In the Bible, it is one of the seven churches of Revelation, praised by Christ without any rebuke, alongside Smyrna.
About the place

Philadelphia was a city in the region of Lydia, in Asia Minor, founded in the 2nd century BC by Attalus II, king of Pergamum, who gave the city the same nickname he himself had earned for his loyalty to his older brother and predecessor on the throne, Eumenes II: Philadelphos, friend of his brother.

The city stood in a fertile volcanic area, but one also subject to frequent and violent earthquakes, which kept its residents in constant insecurity.

In the Bible, Philadelphia is one of the seven churches of Asia to which the apostle John, exiled on the island of Patmos, was sent to write in the book of Revelation.

Alongside Smyrna, it is the only church that receives nothing but praise from Jesus, with no rebuke at all. He acknowledges that it has little strength, but it has kept his word and has not denied his name.

Because of this, Philadelphia became known as a symbol of the faithful church in the midst of weakness. What matters before God is not the size or apparent power of a church, but the faithfulness with which it keeps the word of Christ.

Key verses

I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.

Revelation 3:8

Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come on the whole world to test the inhabitants of the earth.

Revelation 3:10

The one who is victorious I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will they leave it. I will write on them the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on them my new name.

Revelation 3:12

The place today
The place today

Biblical Philadelphia corresponds to the modern city of Alaşehir, in Manisa Province in western Turkey. Unlike other abandoned biblical sites, the place has never ceased to be inhabited.

Few visible ruins remain, among them parts of the ancient Basilica of Saint John in the middle of the modern city. Philadelphia was also the last Byzantine city in Asia Minor to resist the Ottomans, falling only in 1390, long after the others.

Today Turkey has very few Christians, and the church once praised for its faithfulness has almost disappeared from the place. Pray for this nation, that the gospel may flourish again where Philadelphia kept the word of Christ.
