Rephidim

Meaning
Rephidim probably means "resting places" or "supports," a name tied to a stop on the journey through the Sinai desert. There the people freshly out of Egypt faced extreme thirst and fought their first battle as a nation, against the Amalekites.
About the place

Rephidim was one of Israel’s stops in the Sinai desert, on the journey between Egypt and Mount Sinai.

There the people ran out of water and turned against Moses, nearly stoning him out of desperation. God commanded him to strike the rock at Horeb with his staff, and water came out of it for all the people to drink.

Moses called that place Massah and Meribah, words meaning testing and quarreling, because there Israel tested the Lord and quarreled with him.

Afterward, Rephidim was the scene of the newly freed nation’s first battle. The Amalekites attacked Israel, and Joshua led the men in combat while Moses raised his hands atop a hill.

When Moses grew tired and lowered his arms, the Amalekites gained ground. Aaron and Hur held up his hands until sunset, and Joshua defeated the enemy by the sword.

After the victory, Moses built an altar and called it “The Lord is my banner,” a reminder that Israel’s strength came from the Lord, not from its own sword.

Rephidim shows a people who doubted God’s provision and still received water from the rock and victory in battle, a pure gift of divine grace.

The place today
