The Valley of Berachah appears in the Bible in a single episode, but one of great impact: the place where the people of Judah stopped to praise God after an impossible victory.
During the reign of Jehoshaphat, a vast army of Moabites, Ammonites, and other neighboring peoples advanced against Judah. Without the strength to respond, the king called for fasting and sought God in prayer before all the people, at the temple in Jerusalem.
God answered through the prophet Jahaziel: the battle was not Judah’s, but the Lord’s. They only needed to trust and go out to meet the enemy singing praises.
The enemy armies turned against one another and destroyed themselves before Judah even had to fight. When they reached the battlefield, the people spent three days gathering the plunder.
On the fourth day, everyone gathered in a valley to bless the Lord for the victory. Because of this praise, the place was named the Valley of Berachah, which means blessing.
The episode is one of the clearest pictures in the Bible of the power of praise in the midst of fear and war.
