Although integrated into the national and urban life of the country, they keep alive a sense of ancestry and community cohesion, preserving a unique history of perseverance that enriches the cultural diversity of South America.

Community life varies between the coast and the mountains. In Esmeraldas, many depend on fishing, tropical agriculture, and trade, while in the Chota Valley, the cultivation of sugarcane and fruits sustains families. Music, dance, and sports play a central role in the upbringing of youth. Kinship networks and neighborly solidarity support daily life and ensure mutual help in times of hardship.
The vast majority profess the Catholic faith, frequently enriched by popular devotions and patron saint festivals that unite the community. Elements of Afro-Latin spirituality and reverence for ancestors remain present in daily religious expression. Although Christianity is a fundamental part of the local identity, personal biblical engagement and an evangelical presence are still nascent in many communities.
