Afro-Hondurans form a community rich in history and culture, established mainly along Honduras’s Caribbean coast and on its islands. The group brings together descendants of African populations from the colonial period and families who migrated from the West Indies in the nineteenth century to work in agriculture and maritime trade.
Their identity is marked by coastal traditions, vibrant artistic expressions, and a strong attachment to community life. Integrated into society through the Spanish language, they preserve a heritage that enriches the country’s diversity.

Many Afro-Hondurans live in coastal villages or port cities, making a living through small-scale fishing, seafaring, tourism, and regional trade. Extended family shapes social life and mutual care.
Daily meals feature seafood, coconuts, cassava, and plantains. Music, outdoor celebrations, and conversations among neighbors strengthen the community’s bonds of solidarity.
The vast majority profess Christianity, with a significant presence of both the Catholic Church and various evangelical churches. Church buildings are vital centers of community life, celebration, and support for families.
In some settings, traditional customs and popular religious practices blend into daily life, making clear and welcoming biblical teaching essential.

Coastal towns and villages lack healthcare infrastructure, well-maintained roads, and good schools. The shortage of formal employment leaves young people facing emigration and social vulnerability.
Spiritually, there is a need for solid discipleship and teaching materials to train new leaders in local congregations.
