People
Afro-Puerto Ricans are Puerto Ricans with ancestral roots in Africa, whose influence has profoundly shaped Puerto Rico’s identity, culture, and history. Their traditions have enriched the island’s everyday language, Caribbean cuisine, and artistic life, standing out especially in music and popular celebrations.
Concentrated in historic coastal towns such as Loíza and urban centers such as San Juan, as well as in sizable diaspora communities in the United States, they preserve a strong sense of belonging, dignity, and mutual cooperation among neighbors.

Everyday life is vibrant and centered on extended family and the neighborhood. Cultural expressions such as bomba and plena bring generations together in times of celebration and reflection on their own history. Many work in trade, services, the arts, and education. At the same time, they face the economic effects of hurricanes and financial difficulties on the island, relying on networks of solidarity to overcome everyday adversity.
Christianity is the predominant faith among the population, practiced both in traditional Catholic parishes and in active, fervent evangelical communities. Spiritual expression tends to be participatory and dynamic, with expressive praise and strong community involvement. In some local circles, folk religious traditions of Caribbean and African origin still influence everyday practices, existing alongside nominal Christianity.

Ongoing economic difficulties, a shortage of stable jobs, and the lasting effects of weather-related disasters present real challenges for many families on the island. There is a great need for church-led community and social programs, as well as solid biblical discipleship that strengthens young people in the faith, prevents the advance of secularism, and brings hope and renewal to the whole community.
