People
The Christian faith and English spoken at home are important points of reference for the Anglo, known in India as Anglo-Indians. The community emerged from families of European and Indian origin during the colonial period. Over the generations, it developed its own family, school and church ties.
Their history is linked to cities and to work on the railways, in the postal service and in education. India’s independence brought profound changes: some families emigrated, while others stayed and built their lives in the country where they already had roots.

The Anglo have a history of urban life, especially in large cities. Education in English and schools run by the community have helped preserve their ties. Beyond work, social life includes clubs, associations, annual family gatherings and church activities. The experience of belonging to families with European and Indian roots is part of this shared history.
Anglo-Indians include Catholics, Anglicans and Christians from other Protestant traditions. The church plays a role in both the community’s religious life and its social gatherings. Christmas and Easter bring together Christian celebrations and visits to relatives and friends. This heritage offers opportunities for teaching the gospel, studying the Bible and providing pastoral care, so that faith received within the family is also lived out personally.

Traditional jobs in government and on the railways have declined, and many families need new employment opportunities. Young people need support to study and prepare for working life. Older people, often far from relatives who have emigrated, need care. Christian communities can combine practical support, fellowship and biblical teaching, welcoming each family with respect for its history.
