People
The Antambahoaka are an ethnic group living on the southeastern coast of Madagascar, particularly around the mouth of the Mananjary River. They trace their ancestry to nobles of past centuries and preserve customs that are distinctive within Malagasy society. Their community identity is strengthened by solid family ties, enduring reverence for the wisdom of elders, and a strong attachment to ancestral lands. Known for their dignity and cultural cohesion, they communicate in their own dialects of the Malagasy language and keep the memory of their lineages alive through rich oral accounts.

Everyday life among the Antambahoaka revolves around subsistence farming, rice cultivation, and fishing along rivers and the coast. Villages are organized under the moral leadership of elders, who exercise considerable authority in the community. Every seven years, the people gather to celebrate Sambatra, a festive communal circumcision ceremony that reaffirms the honor, manhood, and identity of the clan.
Traditional spirituality permeates every aspect of daily existence. Worship of the ancestors, known as razana, guides family and social decisions. Observance of ritual prohibitions and local taboos, called fady, dictates the community’s behavior and daily routines. Although outside customs and ideas have reached the region, fear of offending ancestral spirits remains the main force guiding religious and community life.

Many villages struggle with geographical isolation, severely inadequate infrastructure, and a lack of essential healthcare and basic sanitation services. Spiritually, there is a strong need for freedom from the constraints and fears created by traditional taboos. The small group of local Christians needs solid discipleship and constant encouragement to share Christ’s message of grace and hope with their own families.
