Who they are

The Atikum are an indigenous people living in the Serra do Umã region, in the interior of Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil. Although they speak Portuguese, they retain a strong ethnic identity expressed in their community gatherings and the sacred toré ritual. They make their living through farming in this semiarid region, seeking to preserve their culture and ancestral land.
