Who they are

The Atyab, also called Atyap, Katab or Kataf, live in southern Kaduna State, Nigeria, in the upper Kaduna River valley, especially in the Zangon Kataf area. They speak Tyap. Farming has long been the foundation of their way of life. The Atyab, who are generally Christian, and the Hausa of the town of Zango, who are generally Muslim, have disputed for decades which group arrived in the region first. In February and May 1992, a dispute over where a market would be located and who would control it escalated into severe violence between the two communities.

How they live

Traditionally, the Atyab farm during the rainy season and hunt during the dry season. Sorghum, pearl millet, beans and yams are among their crops, and the economy depended heavily on sorghum, used for food and beer. They also raised animals, including goats, sheep, pigs and dogs, and communities near the rivers fished.

What they believe

Most Atyab are Christians, both Catholics and Protestants, but only a small proportion are evangelicals. Until the 1950s, most of the people still followed the traditional religion, abwoi, which includes belief in the presence of the dead among the living. It remains active in some places. There are also Muslims among the Atyab.

Needs

The Atyab have experienced centuries of violence among the peoples of the region, and it has continued into the 21st century. In July 2021, armed men attacked two communities in Zangon Kataf and killed nine people in each. In August, another attack, in Atuka, killed a boy and burned a house and four vehicles. Families need protection, peace with their neighbors and a welcoming community as they rebuild their lives. Churches need renewal.
