Daily life among the Silindung revolves around agriculture, particularly irrigated rice cultivation in the valleys and coffee and spices on the hillsides. Local trade and public services also support many families in urban areas.
Their social structure is governed by traditional kinship principles, which organize marriages, rites of passage and solidarity among clans. Family gatherings, community feasts featuring traditional dishes seasoned with andaliman pepper, and celebrations with choral music are central features of their daily life.
The overwhelming majority profess the Christian faith, with strong historical ties to the Lutheran Protestant tradition that established hospitals and schools in the valley. Churches play a central role in civic life and community decisions.
Despite this strong church heritage, traditional customs connected to honoring ancestors and longstanding social rituals still coexist with Christian practice, calling for ongoing pastoral discernment.
