People
The Central Mam descend from the Maya civilization and live mainly in the highlands of western Guatemala. Deeply attached to the land and their cultural heritage, they preserve ancestral customs and a language of their own, passed down from generation to generation. Their identity is shaped by a sense of community, respect for elders, and a deep connection to nature and the mountains surrounding their communities.

Community life revolves around subsistence farming, mainly growing corn, beans, and vegetables on fertile slopes, as well as producing traditional colorful textiles by hand. Collective decisions often involve local leaders, reflecting the value placed on shared community work and bonds of solidarity among neighbors and relatives.
The people’s spirituality reflects the strong presence of historic Catholicism blended with ancestral Maya rituals and beliefs that seek harmony with creation and blessings for the harvest. Evangelical communities are growing in the region, but gaining a deep understanding of the gospel message remains a challenge for many families.
