Who they are
The Chiru live mainly in Manipur, in northeastern India. Their language, also called Chiru, belongs to the Kuki-Chin group and is written in the Latin alphabet, but is not taught in schools. Their main occupation is slash-and-burn farming, growing rice, corn, millet and vegetables. The community follows Christianity and has songbooks in its own language. An Indian government body is working to document the language and produce an English-Chiru dictionary.
