Who they are

Cubans are a Caribbean people of strong cultural identity, marked by a mix of Spanish and African influences. Known worldwide for their musicality, their passion for baseball, and their warm communal life, they preserve close family ties and a singular capacity for hospitality.

Their mother tongue is Spanish, spoken with the cadence and expressions distinctive of the island. Whether in historic cities or the agricultural areas of the interior, the Cuban people carry an expressive artistic vocation and a deep resilience in the face of the political and social transformations that have shaped their land over recent decades.

History and origin

The formation of the Cuban people began with the island's native indigenous peoples, nearly wiped out after Spanish colonization in the sixteenth century. Over the following centuries, hundreds of thousands of Africans were forcibly brought to work in the sugarcane and tobacco plantations, blending their languages, rhythms, and spirituality with Iberian traditions.

After gaining independence in the early twentieth century, Cuba experienced intense political disputes that culminated in the 1959 revolution. The new regime redefined the economy and society, isolating the country from former trading partners and prompting large waves of emigration that spread the Cuban diaspora around the world.

How they live

Daily life for Cubans is marked by simplicity and intense communal living. Conversations on the sidewalks, the habit of sharing the little one has, and a love of popular music are part of the routine in neighborhoods and towns. Rice with black beans, cassava with garlic sauce, and tropical fruits form the base of family cooking, bringing several generations together at the table.

Many work in agriculture, education, public health, or small informal activities to supplement their daily livelihood. Despite facing rationing and shortages of basic goods, they keep solidarity among neighbors alive, helping one another through the hardest times.

What they believe

Historic Catholicism and evangelical Christianity coexist with a strong presence of Afro-Caribbean practices, such as Santería. Many people combine rituals venerating the orishas with Catholic saints, seeking protection, healing, and everyday blessings through offerings and spiritual mediation.

At the same time, recent decades have seen a striking return to spiritual seeking, overcoming the religious apathy promoted in the past. Interest in the gospel and in prayer meetings has led thousands to reassess their traditional convictions in search of authentic hope.

Language and the Bible

The Bible is fully available in Spanish, in several accessible translations. The great challenge on the island is not linguistic but one of physical access to printed copies and study materials, which often arrive in quantities insufficient to meet local congregations’ demand. The use of digital versions and audio has grown where connectivity exists, serving as an essential tool for community Bible teaching.

Barriers to the gospel

Decades of state-imposed secularism and the promotion of atheism have left deep marks on society’s worldview. In addition, strong religious syncretism leads many to see Christianity as just one ritual practice among others, without the need for repentance or exclusive faith in Christ. The scarcity of theological literature and basic resources also hinders solid pastoral training, while the daily struggle for survival often consumes people’s time and attention.

Needs

The people face severe material shortages, including scarcity of medicine, frequent power outages, and transportation difficulties. Economic hardship creates strong emotional pressure on families and drives a continuous exodus of young people seeking opportunities abroad.

Spiritually, there is an urgent need for theological training for local Christian leadership and for teaching materials for children and youth. Strengthening healthy Christian families is essential to generate a living witness amid everyday challenges.

Signs of hope

Even amid historic restrictions on building temples, the house church movement has grown remarkably across the island. Thousands of houses of prayer gather neighbors for worship, Bible study, and mutual care, demonstrating a vibrant faith sustained by communal prayer and active compassion.
