The goroa, also known as gorwaa, mainly inhabit the highlands and valleys of northern Tanzania, in the region around Babati. They belong to the South Cushitic language branch and share close historical and cultural ties with neighboring peoples such as the iraqw. Traditionally tied to the land, they keep their mother tongue alive in daily community life and family gatherings, cultivating a strong connection to their native hills and the memory of their ancestors.

Life among the goroa revolves around subsistence farming and livestock raising. They cultivate maize, beans, sorghum, and vegetables in fertile valleys, while raising cattle and goats represents a store of wealth and social prestige. Families typically live on dispersed smallholdings, where cooperation among neighbors during planting and harvesting strengthens social cohesion and mutual solidarity.
The majority of the goroa profess the Christian faith, the fruit of the work of earlier generations of gospel messengers. At the same time, traditional beliefs linked to respect for ancestors and rites of spiritual protection still influence some families, challenging local Christian leadership to guide the people into discipleship rooted in grace.

Many rural communities face a shortage of well-equipped health posts and a lack of clean drinking water during dry seasons. Spiritually, the local church needs ongoing discipleship, deep Bible study, and training materials in their mother tongue so that faith may transform every area of family and community life.
