People
The Gude live in northern Cameroon and northeastern Nigeria. In Nigeria, they live in Adamawa State, near Mubi, and in Borno State, in Askira-Uba. In Cameroon, they live in the Far North Region, in Mayo-Tsanaga Division, and a little farther east. They are also called Cheke, Mapuda or Shede. They speak Gude, a language in the Chadic branch of the Afro-Asiatic family.

Most Gude are farmers who grow crops on hillside terraces. Groundnuts, maize and millet are among their main crops, along with melons, pumpkins and beans. A woman may cultivate a small plot of her own, and the money from selling that harvest belongs to her. Villages have round mud houses with thatched roofs, linked by woven straw fences around an open courtyard.
Most Gude in Nigeria are Muslim. In Cameroon, traditional religions and Islam have a similar following. In traditional religions, each clan has its own healer, who also serves as a link between the people and the spirits. Most believe in a creator god, but pray to ancestors and spirits, who petition him on their behalf. There are also a small number of Gude Christians, including Evangelicals.

The Gude need to understand that the Creator is a Savior who loves and cares for them, rather than a distant god. Today many acknowledge a creator, but their devotion is directed toward the spirit world. Gude Christians need teaching that equips them to speak about Jesus to others among their own people.
