Who they are

The Hassaniya are a Sudanese Arab subgroup traditionally settled along the riverbanks and savannas near the Nile in northern and central Sudan. Their mother tongue is a dialect of Sudanese Arabic, which expresses a rich oral tradition, poetry, and lineage accounts.

They deeply cherish their Arab roots and a strong sense of community belonging. Over the centuries, they have blended local customs with practices inherited from their ancestors, maintaining close kinship ties that shape their social and cultural identity within the Sudanese context.

How they live

Historically devoted to raising cattle, sheep, and camels, many Hassaniya also practice subsistence farming along watercourses, growing sorghum and vegetables. Villages are organized around extended families, where the authority of elders guides collective decisions.

Hospitality toward visitors is a sacred duty. Shared meals and the drinking of spiced tea mark the daily rhythm and community celebrations.

What they believe

The Hassaniya profess Sunni Islam, which permeates nearly every aspect of daily life, from birth to funerary rites. Devotion includes regular prayers, religious feasts on the Muslim calendar, and a strong reverence for ancestral traditions. The Islamic faith is seen as an inseparable part of their very ethnicity.

Needs

Recurring droughts, a lack of medical infrastructure, and recent political instability in Sudan directly affect the well-being of these families. There is a shortage of clean water, schools, and rural development support. Spiritually, most have never had the opportunity to hear the good news presented clearly.
