Who they are

The Igede live in central Nigeria, mainly in Benue State, with their homeland in Oju and Obi, and smaller communities in other states. They speak the Igede language, which has a written form and a complete Bible, and most identify as Christians, largely Protestant. Farming supports most families.

The most important festival is Igede Agba, the new yam festival, held in September. Families and visitors eat yams prepared in various ways, listen to music and dance.

How they live

Most families make their living from farming, growing yams, cassava, rice and other grains. The size of a man’s yam plot indicates his wealth. Large families share the same land, meals and farm work.

New yams must not be eaten before Igede Agba. During the festival, people share meals and settle outstanding disagreements amicably. Afterward, families join together to work on the farms of their elders, one at a time.

What they believe

Many Igede are Christians, with a strong Protestant presence. In traditional religion, the Igede recognize a supreme creator called Ohe and the spirits of deceased relatives, who are connected to daily life and harvests. In some accounts of Igede Agba, the community gives thanks to deities and deceased relatives for the harvest.

Many families blend Christian faith with traditional beliefs, while others follow only one of the two. The same festival can therefore hold different meanings for those who take part.

Needs

Igede Christians need deeper biblical teaching, stronger churches and trained leaders, especially among young people who move to cities to study and work. Many call themselves Christians without a personal relationship with Jesus. Farming families need sustainable farming methods and fair markets for selling their harvests.
