Who they are

The Ikulu, who call themselves Bakulu, live in southern Kaduna State in central Nigeria, mainly in the areas of Zangon Kataf, Kachia and Kauru. Their territory is known as Akulu. They speak Kulu, also called Ikulu, a language of the Plateau group. The name Akulu also appears in the title of their traditional ruler, Agwom Akulu. The community seeks to pass its language on to children and maintain ties between those who live in their homeland and those who have moved to cities.

How they live

Farming is the main occupation of the Ikulu. Families grow yams, corn, millet and sorghum, as well as ginger, an important source of income for many households. They also raise livestock and work in local trade. Songs, dances, celebrations and stories passed down through the generations are part of community life. Elders provide guidance, and helping neighbors is a value the community nurtures.

What they believe

The vast majority of the Ikulu identify as Christian; a minority follow traditional religions. In the early part of the last century, the arrival of missionaries in southern Kaduna led many Ikulu to the Christian faith, and teachers and pastors emerged among them. Kulu is used in worship, as well as in conversations at home and community gatherings.

Needs

Preserving Kulu and teaching it to new generations is a concern within the community itself, as is expanding opportunities for young people. For the churches, this also involves equipping people to teach the Scriptures in this language and guide children and young people in the faith. The translation of the remaining books of the Bible deserves prayer, along with the training of pastors and care for families.
