People
Who they are
The Itza are an Indigenous people of Maya origin living mainly in the Petén region, around Lake Petén Itzá in northern Guatemala. Historically, they were among the last Maya communities to resist colonial expansion.
Today, while most speak Spanish in everyday life, the Itza strive to preserve their cultural roots, historical memories, and distinct community identity.
